They’re not fierce competitors but they are certainly fun to watch. Each owner has his or her own tips for training a Wiener dog racer, that they hope will bring their dog to the finish line first — or even to the finish line at all.
Dachshunds can move fast, but racing in not really their thing. When the starting gate goes up, some run, some wander, while others stand around sniffing their neighbors. But it’s all good fun. Whatever the result, it’s an enjoyable experience for participants and spectators alike.
Most owners have treats or toys on race day. They head to the finish line making sure that their dog sees where they are, and they shake treats or the dogs favorite toy. Wiener dogs like to run and play, but many of them aren’t much for racing. Half of them don’t even cross the finish line, but they get their moment in the spotlight.
